Year 1 update

This page is updated every two weeks - W/C 23 February 2026

Message from the teachers

Welcome back to Spring 2! We hope you all had a restful break. The children have been loving the lovely weather this week and have really enjoyed getting back out onto the playground with their friends.

This week has been Assessment Week and we have been extremely impressed with how hard the children have worked. They have approached their assessments with real resilience and courage. Results will be shared with you at the end of term on Arbor.

We will soon be sending home the lyrics for our production of Pirates vs Mermaids. Please practise these with your child at home. Year 1 children can choose whether they would like to be a pirate or a mermaid. We will let you know when costumes need to be brought into school.

Production dates and timings: 9:30 Wednesday the 25th of March and 14:00 Thursday the 26th of March.

World Book Day

March 5th is World Book Day and Hollymount is excited to show off our love of reading! The children will have a day packed with events that focus on reading for please including a Book Sampling Workshop, a visit to the Reading Café, Door Decorating Contest and Book Buddies.

On the day, children can come, if they choose, dressed as an appropriate character from their favourite book.

Thank you again for your continued support. We are looking forward to another fantastic half term!

An update from the classroom and the teaching and learning taking place

Maths update -

This week in Maths we have been learning about measuring length and height. Next week, we will move on to place value within 50.

You can support your child at home by:

  • Comparing objects that are longer, taller and shorter in everyday situations
  • Practising counting to 20
  • Asking your child to find one more and one less than a given number

Important reminders -

  • Toys in School: Some children are still bringing toys into school. Please remind your child that toys should not be brought in, as they can easily get lost or broken and may distract from learning.
  • Church Visit – Volunteers Needed:
As part of our learning about Easter, we will be visiting Dundonald Church in Raynes Park on the morning of 10th March.
    • o Chestnut Class will need three parent volunteers
    • o Oak Class will need two parent volunteers

We will walk to the church and return to school by 12:00pm in time for lunch. If we are unable to secure enough volunteers, we will unfortunately need to cancel the trip. Please let us know if you are able to help.

  • Please continue to read and revise the weekly phonics and maths homework sheets sent home.

Remember to send reading books and library books into school every Monday.
