Dear Year 1 families, We have been working extremely hard with the children to prepare them for the Phonics Screening Check. We are attaching the slides again which explain the Phonics Screening Check in more detail. They also include a practice test and online games to help the children prepare for the check. Please could you practise these over the half term so the children are ready for the check in the second week back. We will not be sending reading books home over the half-term break, but we will be sending home the usual home learning sheet, so please use this to practise. In addition, we will be completing the NFER tests in reading and maths during our first week back. No preparation is required for these tests.
Morning Snack We provide fruit for the children for morning snack, but if they would like to come in with their own, please ensure it is a small, healthy snack such as a piece of fruit or crackers and not crisps or chocolate. Volunteers for Sports Event We will be taking the children to Donhead sports ground on Wednesday 17th June for a multisport event with other schools. We will be walking from Hollymount straight after morning registration. The event will last for 1 hour and then we will return to school. We will need volunteers for this outing, so if you are able to help, please get in touch with Miss Cramp or Mrs Reinecke.
We hope the children really enjoy their trip to Chessington Zoo today and learning about animal classification. Have a sunny and restful half term, From the Year 1 Team
Literacy Loop Hot off the presses, Spring and Summer's Literacy Loop. Have a read here! What you can expect to find out:

An update from the classroom and the teaching and learning taking place |
|
Literacy Update In Literacy, we have been working on our storyboard for our own version of the short film The Blue Umbrella. We can’t wait to see the children showcase their creativity in their writing! On our return next term, we will be starting instruction writing and making a rain gauge. Please could all children bring in a plastic bottle on the first day back (a 2-litre bottle would be perfect), as we will make the rain gauge before the children learn to write the instructions themselves (please see an example rain gauge below).
Maths Update After half term, we will be continuing with ‘Position and Direction’ before moving onto fractions. Please can you continue counting up to and back from 50 and practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. NumberBlocks is a fantastic visual aid to support this learning. |
