Sport, PE and Dance at Hollymount School

At Hollymount Primary School, we believe that Sport, PE and Dance are essential parts of a child’s education. Physical activity supports wellbeing, teamwork, and confidence, and we aim to ensure every child develops a lifelong love of movement and sport.

Our pupils enjoy a broad and engaging PE curriculum, specialist dance lessons, intra-house competitions, and opportunities to represent Hollymount in Merton sports events and tournaments throughout the year.

Physical Education Lessons at Hollymount

Every class takes part in two high-quality PE lessons each week:

  • One lesson taught by Mr Vivian, our specialist PE teacher.

  • One lesson delivered by the class teacher.

Both sessions follow the National Curriculum for Physical Education and our Hollymount PE curriculum map, ensuring a balanced approach that builds skills, confidence and understanding across a wide range of sports and activities.

From gymnastics and athletics to invasion games and outdoor adventure activities, our aim is to help all children enjoy being active and achieve their personal best.

Dance Lessons

Every class at Hollymount also enjoys 30 minutes of specialist dance teaching each week, led by Charlotte, our experienced dance specialist.

Through dance, pupils explore different styles, cultures and creative expression. These sessions promote coordination, rhythm, confidence and teamwork, and children often share their learning through performances and whole-school events.

Dance at Hollymount is inclusive, joyful and designed to help every child shine.

Intra-House Sports Competitions

In Key Stage 2, pupils take part in regular intra-house sporting competitions.
Each house team competes against the others in a range of sports — from athletics and football to dodgeball and cricket.

These friendly events develop teamwork, resilience and a sense of pride in representing their house. They’re also a brilliant way for pupils to apply the skills they’ve learned in PE lessons in a supportive, competitive environment.

Sports Fixtures, Tournaments and Events

At Hollymount School, we are passionate about sport and strive to take part in as many Merton sports competitions as possible.
We also arrange our own fixtures and festivals with other local schools.

From football and netball to NFL, inclusion festivals and dance showcases — we love sport!

Team selection and training vary depending on the event. Sometimes teams are chosen to give pupils the opportunity to try new sports, and at other times we select our strongest teams to compete at a higher level.
Mr Vivian uses a range of approaches when selecting pupils, including observations in PE lessons, external club experience, and trial sessions.

We understand that not being chosen for a team can be disappointing. Staff always manage this sensitively, helping pupils to stay positive, set goals and continue developing their skills for future opportunities.
