Reception Update

Our continual provision
‘Choosing time’ has been a huge success and the children in both classes have loved selecting and using their choice of activity and resources in their child-led learning. Favourites and preferences are beginning to develop as well as friendships through the pursuit of shared interests.
We have loved seeing both the range of activities that the children have chosen alongside the creativity and imagination they have brought to their endeavours.
Outside environment
Our wonderful outside space has been well used this week. We are so lucky to have such a large space which is covered so no matter what the weather, the children can get fresh air, stretch their legs and have a lot of fun.
Phonics
Both classes continued their fantastic start with their Phonics session this week. We learnt 4 more GPCs (Grapheme Phoneme Correspondences), i as in iguana, n as in net, m as in mouse and d as in duck. We looked at words that have these phonemes as their initial sounds, practiced forming each grapheme and played lots and lots of oral blending games – e.g. sounding our c/a/t/ and then arriving at the word cat. Well done to all of the children for continuing their positive beginning to their reading journeys.
We look forward to seeing all their hard work when their homework comes back on Monday.
Maths
In Maths, we continued our work on Master the Curriculum. This week we spent the lessons looking at subitising which is the ability to look at a small set of objects and instantly know how many there are without counting them. We have looked at sorting objects in to groups and being able to talk about why we have made those choices. We have also looked at comparing groups of objects to see which one has more and remembering that just because items are larger, doesn’t mean there are more of them. Finally, we have been making fabulous patterns all around the classroom.
Busy, busy, busy
In the background, lots of work is going on preparing for some exciting activities in the coming weeks. Trips, internal visits and even the Christmas performances are being organised. It’s all very exciting.
Updates
This page will be updated every two weeks. We hope you find it useful and gives you a little insight into some of the wonderful things your children get up to each day.
