Reception Update

Friday 22nd May 2026
The end of Summer 1 term has come around so quickly. We have been super-busy over the last 6 weeks and enjoyed some many things. Chicks, sports days, egg drops, beans and wellies - fun times!

🎨 Creative
The children have been extra creative over the last couple of weeks. As well as the usual construction, junk modelling and art, they have been thinking about, designing and creating egg drop creations. Their ideas were discussed and tested and refined.
🥚 Egg Drop Challenge
Wednesday proved to be the most exciting day with the Reception Egg Drop Challenge. We had spent the previous days talking about what a science experiment was, how we formulate ideas but we had to test them.

We made predictions about what might happen and why. We also talked about eggs breaking was important so we could learn what doesn’t work as well as what does work.

The children dropped the eggs off the Key Stage 2 floor, down to the ground outside Willow and Holly classrooms. It was a long way and we were very impressed by the number of eggs that made it to the ground safety. We definitely have some scientists, mechanics and engineers of the future.

Thank you to all the children and parents for taking part. It made it such a fun afternoon.
🕺Dance
In Dance, Charlotte has been adding a bit of drama to her lessons and the children are loving it. This week they were “making a boat to get the treasure chest back to the pirate who stole our magic carpets!” By the look of it, they are totally immersed in the story. Thanks Charlotte.

👩🏫 Around the classroom
We have had lots of fun in and out of the classroom over the last couple of weeks. From planting to reading, writing to marble runs and lots and lots of other activities.

♾️ Infinity and beyond
Children love big numbers and that has been very evident this week. Some children have loved writing out larger and larger numbers, counting in ones, twos and tens. We were so impressed and they got to show Ms. Steninger, the head of maths. She was very impressed.

💰 Fund
If you would like to contribute to the £1 a week Reception fund, please see your class teacher. This can be paid termly as well. The fund is used to purchase items for fun activities such as baking, planting and craft activities.
🎨🖌️✂️ Junk modelling
We get through a lot of junk modelling materials and we know you love receiving the creations at the end of the day. If you have any recycling, please can we have it. Thanks.
💝 Thank You

We hope you enjoy the lovely sunny weekend, and good luck to anyone running the London Marathon.
All the best,
The Reception Team
Useful information
Nut and Sesame Free School
We are a nut and sesame–free school. Some children have severe allergies, so please check all packaging for any food that is brought in, whether for packed lunches or birthday treats. Please note that this also includes foods such as hummus, pesto and seeded breads. Please also cut grapes in half to avoid a choking hazard.
Snacks
The children have access to fruit throughout the day, so there is no need to bring snacks for school time. The only snacks required are for after-school clubs.
Bags
We have limited space in the classroom, so please do not send rucksacks. Every child needs to bring a school bag. Please see the office if you need to purchase one. If your child is prone to toilet accidents, a drawstring bag with spare clothes, kept at school, would be very helpful.
Pick-up
Pick-up from Reception is at 3:10 p.m. This is purposefully 5 minutes earlier than the rest of the school. If you are also collecting a child further up the school, please collect your Reception child first.
Dance and PE
On days with either dance or PE, children are asked to come to school in their Hollymount PE kit which they will wear all day. PE and dance will officially start for Reception from Monday 15th. From the 15th, PE kit is to be worn on PE and Dance days detailed below.
Willow Class - Tue (PE), Thu (Dance), Fri (PE)
Holly Class - Tue (PE), Friday (Dance & PE)
